I am Gaby Albo, born and raised in Mexico City. That’s where my heart lives but my dreams keep bringing me back to The Big Apple, the magical and crazy New York City.
I was a very shy child. Never would have imagined that my life was going to be stepping foot on so many stages around the world, as I wanted to be a gymnast, magician or president .
My life changed when I was almost litteraly dragged by my childhood friend to a musical theatre summer camp which impacted my life by making me more extroverted. So one day I was singing at the hair salon and the hairdresser came to me as I was singing with my iPods on and she said…Gaby, you are such a bad singer. I have a friend that’s a voice teacher, why don’t you go and check it out. And I did and that completely changed my life. Everything from that point on started unfolding itself smoothly.
I went to my first audition in Mexico City just as an experiment, to see how it all worked out. Didn’t know much of the show but ended up booking it. It turned out to be A Chorus Line…a classic!
At the end of the run I knew that I wanted to do that forever. But at 19 I thought I was old and had to just keep going (LOL) but I didn’t book the next big show so that led me to apply for AMDA in NY which I was fortunate enough to attend with the immense, continuous support of my family.
I then booked West Side Story, my first national tour, did a couple of cruise ship contracts and then life took me back to Mexico. My dad always said to be ready for when the opportunity came. So I would always train and that’s how one day, I took a workshop with Luis Salgado.
He offered a couple of scholarships (which I didn’t get) but I knew I wanted to go back to NY so I reached out and asked if I could have one to keep training there. And he granted it to me.
It was a couple of weeks of exploration, focus and community. And then I didn’t see him again for a loooong time.
I do remember reaching out to him when I wanted to audition for the first national tour of On Your Feet!, for which I actually got a callback for but I didn’t end up going because I was on my way back to Mexico.
Life went on and about 9 years layer, one day as I was watching TV, I saw an actor that looked just like Luis. He was so alike that I had the urge to send him a picture saying that I had found his twin brother but as I was about to send it, I thought “nah, he’s going to think its weird” and so I didn’t.
But then 2 days after that, he texted me saying that they had been auditioning for this project and they hadn’t been able to find one of their leads and asked if I wanted to submit my materials to which I thought, “Yeah, why not?”. I had no idea that that moment would change my life forever.
That project happened to be the premier of On Your Feet!, in Spanish!
It was a very short contract that required me to be in Washington D.C. for a month from then and I would also have to leave the contract I was on at the moment which was Aladdin, with OCESA, the biggest theatre company in Mexico.
It all seemed crazy but, it was a gut feeling so clear that it made me leave my life in Mexico and take a leap of faith and, oh boy it payed off! I was blessed to win a Helen Hayes award for Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical.
It was a rollercoaster! Moving, first leaving, life…. But timing was just so perfect because after that short contract ended and I was back in Mexico deciding what to do next, I
got a call to audition for the national tour of the same show but in English, and again, led by Luis Salgado. I just love how he works. He invites others to play, discover and create with him.
I rolled on tour with that
production for almost 2 years! Lots of hard work, amazing friends, one nighters, different audiences and a bunch of growth, gratitud and memories.
After that, I had taken the decision to move to NY and try my luck in the Big Apple which was a dream I had been wanting to make happen for a long time.
And right before the date that I had set to make that happened I got a call from my agent saying that the SIX team wanted me to attend their final callbacks for their Broadway production.
I didn’t have my Visa yet but I flew in, auditioned just to find out that I didn’t get it. BUT they just had an opening on their tour and they said they would love me to join the team. BUT…I still didn’t have a Visa!
So long story short… Magic worked out in my favor and I was able to join the tour around 3 weeks after that. Went back home, solved the Visa situation and packed my bags to get rolling again with this show that I had been dreaming of (and working hard for). And was once again blessed to be recognized by the Helen Hayes Awards 2025 with the Outstanding Performer – Non resident Production for my work on SIX.
Looking back I am just grateful for every step of the way and every time I see a Rev Latina or a Salgado Productions post it just makes me excited to think how may more doors are there ro be open and dreams about to come true.
Forever thankful!
